The Story Behind the Piece
Nivara met Saikros the panther the first time she dream traveled. Spectated by the full moon, she spent the whole night racing him through the jungle while her physical body slept. Communing with other species was easiest in the dreamspace, where the grip of survival instincts could be bypassed.
If only her fellow villagers could understand the joy of running barefoot through the verdant maze, the thrill of keeping pace with the jungle’s top predator. Nivara wished they could remember the truth of their wild divinity—that they too are children of the Earth, bred with fierce aliveness akin to the panther.
On many nights she returned to join Saikros in explorations of the jungle and beyond. In the vast expanse of her dreams, she was free from the toils of the village with its many labors and rules. In the night portal, she was a goddess; a powerful, creative, and boundless force of nature.
Each time the morning called her back to her body, she awoke with the same vow: to teach her future children the ways of the wild; to cultivate in them the spirit of play many of the villagers had long forgotten. Like their mother, Nivara’s children would know well the untamed jungle of their hearts and minds.
